Project carried out in the framework of the Spain-Japan Dual Year 2013-2014

09/07/2014 to 02/11/2014

This exhibition project consists of a unique installation created by Esther Pizarro and curated by Menene Gras Balaguer. Based on the archipelago that makes up the Japanese country, a Japanese garden has been designed to connect with the universal aesthetic values of this culture. A Japanese garden is a space that invites contemplation by imitating the nature that it tries to reproduce in miniature, but at the same time sharing aesthetic codes with calligraphy, art and tradition. All the components that form part of the Japanese garden import a symbolism and rules that inform the meaning of the arrangement of each and every one of them, as if they were the elements of a graphic script with a defined cultural identity. This project produced by Matadero Madrid and Casa Asia delimits the space of the garden on the territorial plan occupied by the country. It is a dry garden surrounded by a sea of salt, in which the eight regions have become islands, opening paths between them so that the public can move around as if inside a living organism, in the image of nature in each of its representations.
