"[MAFD] :: Mapping Active Fire Data".
Sculpture Centre of Candás Museo Antón, Candás, Asturias, Spain

06/09/2018 to 13/10/2018

The project [MAFD] :: Mapping Active Fire Data, by the artist Esther Pizarro, shows the result of the research carried out thanks to the award of the 2017 Antón Grant to support sculptural creation, organised by the EDP Foundation and the Candás Sculpture Centre, Museo Antón, Carreño Town Council, Asturias. It also has the support, funding and participation of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the Subdirección General de las Bellas Artes; and will be exhibited at the Sala Fragua de Tabacalera Madrid, from 22 November 2018 to 27 January 2019.

[MAFD] :: Mapping Active Fire Data is a three-dimensional, dynamic and interactive mapping of the forest fires that have ravaged the earth's surface over the past decade (2008-2017). By analysing and filtering data extracted from scientific sources, the project makes visible how our planet is losing part of its land surface, due to the wounds caused by fires that are continuously burning. The installation uses cartography and diagrams and graphs as vehicles for the visualisation of data; and aims to draw attention to an environmental problem; using the visual metaphor that artistic language possesses as a tool to activate sensibilities, consciences and questions. The project is part of a line of work developed in recent years that aims to highlight environmental civil emergencies, and consists of a sculptural, interactive and dynamic installation; a three-dimensional visualisation that works with and from new technologies, but without forgetting the physicality offered by materials treated in an analogue way. The main objective of the study is to explore the three-dimensional visualisation of data; through an installation sculptural language, associated with new technologies; and with a specific narrative, the wounds suffered by the earth's crust due to the enormous amount of forest fires that, intentionally or accidentally, are produced on it.
The proposal, at a formal level, comprises a main nucleus, made up of fifteen wood fibre modules, which represent the terrestrial planisphere by means of transparent glass rods. This matrix device generates a kind of three-dimensional pixel screen on which to visualise, through the reflection of light on the glass, the evolution of forest fires in the time frame under investigation. Connected to this central core are ten structures that collect, analyse and filter the data and graphs pertaining to one year of the decade from 2008-2017, based on three parameters: burned area, CO2 emissions, and number of fires (fire count); while interacting with the central piece through touch screens that the viewer activates. Light, technology and audio complete the ensemble (technological supports developed in collaboration with Markus Schroll). The installation [MAFD] :: Mapping Active Fire Data aims to draw attention to an environmental problem using the visual metaphor that artistic language possesses as a tool to activate sensibilities, consciences and questions.
