RESEARCH MOBILITY: Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, Finland

Happy to be doing a research mobility at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, Finland, from 29.08.2024 to 25.09.2024

Grateful to Maarit Mäkelä, Doctor of Arts, Professor and EMPIRICA Research Group Leader, Department of Design at Aalto University (School of Arts, Design and Architecture), for hosting and guiding my stay at Aalto. EMPIRICA's current research foci include creation and materiality, creative practices and pedagogies, and world-making processes that extend beyond individual agencies to encompass multiple modes of social and environmental coexistence. These lines of enquiry allow us to openly invite different collaborators and promote a critical approach to knowledge production through diverse research formats.

Thanks also to Pirjo Kaariainen, head of CHEMARTS, for sharing his knowledge and experience on biomaterials, for his advice and references. CHEMARTS is a long-term strategic collaboration between two schools at Aalto University, the School of Chemical Engineering (CHEM) and the School of Art, Design and Architecture (ARTS). The main objective is to inspire students and researchers to explore biomaterials together and create new concepts for the future use of cellulose and other biomaterials.

The stay will take place from 29 August to 25 September 2024, in a total of four weeks. The main objective of this mobility is to share research methodologies in projects focused on the exploration of biomaterials, biological design and sustainability of creative environments for the development of artistic projects.

This stay is supported by the Santander Open Academy Scholarship - International Mobility Grants for Professors 2024, from the European University of Madrid.
Additionally, it has been selected in the second Call for Individual Mobility 2023/2024, programme ‘Culture moves Europe’, funded by the European Commission.
