Liquid Mapping: Connected to... represents the cartography of how Spain's geography is connected to the rest of the planet through submarine cabling, the information highways of the 21st century. Ninety-nine percent of Internet traffic circulates through a network of cables, invisible to our eyes, which weaves the seabed of the oceans and allows data to be transmitted in real time. Like a network of underwater arteries, this aquatic mapping, imperceptible to the naked eye, functions as the great information highways of the 21st century. These arteries are constructed of thin glass threads capable of transporting large packets of information.
The exhibition space becomes a large installation of coloured electroluminescent cable tubes (according to their year of implantation) arranged horizontally and at different heights on the floor of the room, which three-dimensionally trace the underwater layout of the twenty-one submarine cables that connect our geography with the rest of the planet. All the cables implanted in the same year have a similar colour, for quick identification, and are constructed with a transparent glass tube through which a line of light circulates; a rhizome of coloured threads with a dynamic flow of intensity and fluctuation.
The floor installation is connected to the corner of the gallery through a conduit that houses all the coloured cables to be distributed in an orderly fashion along the vertical plane of the gallery and generate a "timeline" of the growth of this map of connectivity. Each cable will end up in its corresponding year of implantation, and will feed a luminous screen, almost like a computer monitor, where the cables built in that year are decontextualised separately from the geographic set, to visualise them in their linear description, with their geographic coordinates, together with the data legend that conceptualises the installation. A total of ten screens represent the years in which there has been activity in the construction of submarine cables in our country, and build the timeline that runs along three walls of the gallery, establishing a visual continuity and temporal space in the exhibition as a whole. Finally, a soundscape of underwater cables will envelop the whole, introducing the spectator into an almost aquatic and metallic scenography.
