🌱 New Article Published: Exploring Material Ecology
We’re excited to share the latest article by our PI Esther Pizarro, titled "Exploring Material Ecology: Bio-Based Materials, Taxonomies and Processing", recently published in Cuadernos del Centro de Estudios de Diseño y Comunicación (256), by the University of Palermo.
Material ecology examines the flow and lifecycle of materials within ecosystems. In the creative context, it fosters the development of bio-based materials through digital fabrication techniques, bringing together disciplines such as biology, material science, engineering, and computing.
This approach promotes the use of biomaterials, also known as DIY Materials, derived from biological tissues and developed through biofabrication technologies, encompassing both Growing Design and Craft Design processes. Research in this field opens up new opportunities for sustainable innovation in art, design, and technology.
🧪 As a case study, the article presents BioLabMatrix, an artistic installation conceived as a material library of bio-based samples, with a focus on spirulina experimentation. The piece bridges contemporary art, sustainability, and material science, offering fresh perspectives on ecological design.
