Genetic Map, 2000
Polyester resin, cement, stones
1200 x 800 cm.
Parra, San José de Ocoa, Dominican Republic

Genetic Map generates a demographic cartography of the Dominican Republic, where the main lines correspond to actual routes of the country's road network and are articulated based on the birth dates of all members of the community of Parra, in San José de Ocoa, Dominican Republic. Just as a road is understood as an artery in the living organism of the island, Genetic Map represents the family tree of this community, reflecting the census of the existing population.  The dates of birth are made in polyester resin colored according to the visual palette of the typical houses of the island and are embedded in the pavement as a traditional cobblestone.  We have taken advantage of the existing rocks in the chosen location, which function as seats and at the same time metaphorically refer to the mountains and hills of the island.  The concept of place as well as the concept of route is implicit in the whole work.
