Percepciones de L.A., Topografía y Memoria © 1997

The body of work developed in Los Angeles between 1996 and 1997 is a visual diary of perceptions and experiences through which I pay my personal tribute to this complex, multi-layered megapolis.

The sculptures, installations and artist's books presented in this serie are based on the conception of the body as an instrument that experiences space through perception. The act of walking is a way of measuring both space and time. The paths introduce you into the landscape, they mark the places and man thus establishes his territory. This philosophy of experimentation and perception of space is reflected in the conceptual premises on which this work is based. The solidified aluminum and paper footprints, used in pieces such as Human Perception or Footprints, are nothing more than a gesture that reflects my path in the city.

The series Suburbia, Freeway and Port refers us to real locations in the city, questioning the usual image we have of these places. On the other hand, the works Centripetal Implosion, the Freeway (17, SW), and Absent Freway (17, SW), confront the viewer with a perception of the city to which he is not accustomed, the negative space, that is, the non-city.

Perceptual fragmentation and its allusion to memory and time is another significant feature. Memory, Perception and Imagination are addressed to memory and the memories that remain after an important experience in our life.
